Trekking in the Indian Himalayas

The Himalayan range covers the entire northern part of India, nestling five major states of the country within it. The ancient Indian pilgrims who have travelled in these mountains since time immemorial coined a Sanskrit word for the Himalayas meaning 'The Abode of Snow'. Some of the reasons why people have been so fascinated by the Indian Himalayas is because of the Hindu pilgrim routes, the low valleys that abruptly rise up in high mountain ranges, the densely forested areas lying just a mountain range away from barren cold deserts, and the lovely people of the mountains with their unique hospitable lifestyles.

FULL SERVICE TREKS

You only carry a day pack for items you need during the day, such as your camera, water bottle and sun cream. The main baggage is carried by pack horses or porters.

TREK CUISINE

You usually arrive at the next camp site by 4pm. Camp will already be set up by the time you get there, and tea/coffee and biscuits will be ready to welcome you. Supper will be ready just before dark, and will be served in the dining tent. The standard of cooking on trek is both varied and excellent, with the style of cooking being a compromise between local and western food. Menus vary from day to day, but typically we start with soup. The main course is often a rice-based meal with meat stew or mild curry, plus separate vegetable and salad dishes. A sweet dish is provided after the meal. Our meal is finished with tea, coffee or hot chocolate.

Responsible tourism

We have carefully selected our ground agents for their reliability, quality of service and their likeminded philosophy of supporting the mountain communities and people that make for a special holiday experience.

Private tailor-made treks Many clients choose to have tailor-made treks. This applies to individuals, groups of friends, honeymooners and schools who would prefer to fix their own dates and plan their own itinerary. Private treks cost approximately the same, and often less, than our equivalent brochure departures. Many clients prefer not to have a European leader and are happy to trek with the assistance of our well qualified English speaking Sherpas.

With over 25 years in the trekking business we have listed a selection of stunning treks for the outdoor enthusiasts.

TREK GRADING

GRADE A:
These trips can be enjoyed by anyone who leads a reasonably active life. The trek is eight days or less. The degree of vehicle support is high, and there are opportunities for rest days. There may be up to 5 hours / 11 miles per day of trekking

GRADE B:
Grade B tours involve some longer walks. Some previous hill-walking experience is recommended. They may best be described as moderate. Up to 6.5 hours / 14 miles per day.

GRADE B/C:
The day stages on these treks are mostly graded B, although some of the days are, unavoidably, slightly longer.

GRADE C:
These treks are generally longer (minimum 2 weeks) and more strenuous (long ascents/descents, steep gradients, rough ground, some backpacking). Hill walking experience and a reasonably high standard of fitness and stamina are essential for enjoyment of a grade C trek. Up to 8 hours / 20 miles per day.

GRADE D:
You need to be very fit for these tours, be familiar with mountain walking, be capable of carrying a backpack, and possess a fair degree of stamina. We include treks which involve river, moraine, glacier and snow crossing in this category.

GRADE E:
A high level of fitness and experience of walking on scree, snow, ice and packed snow is required. There will be ice axes, crampons and, in some cases, ropes used. Climbs however are non-technical.
