VARANASI
Is commonly called Benaras; devout Hindus call it Kashi (resplendent with light). It has been the religious capital of Hinduism through all recorded time. No one knows the date of Varanasi's founding, but when the historic Buddha, Siddartha Gautama, came here in 500BC to deliver his first teaching, he encountered an ancient and developed settlement. Every devout Hindu wants to visit Varanasi to purify body and soul in the Ganges, to shed all sin and if possible, to die here in old age and find release from the cycle of rebirth.
