Images of India

Based in the Himalayan foothills of northern India, this special interest holiday is intended to help beginners through advanced amateurs interpret rather than just "document" their travel and cultural experiences - through the lens. The workshop is designed for digital photographers and includes additional instruction on downloading, saving, organizing, and archiving images, and on cropping, sizing, and manipulating images on the computer. Participants should bring their own SLR digital camera, laptop computer, and editing software.

We begin in the capital, Delhi, and embark on a train journey to Amritsar to visit the Golden Temple, before we reach the rich green foothills of the Himalayas to stay in Mcleodganj, home to the exiled Dalai Lama of Tibet.

Once in Mcleodganj, we'll briefly review the basics of photography and digital, talk about colour, light and composition and how to combine them to create stunning imagery, before we embark on our fascinating journey into the Tibetan cultural and natural beauty of the area.

Following breakfast each morning, you'll set out to make photographs
in and around Mcleodganj, with its thriving Tibetan community, in the
surrounding villages of Hindu Gaddi shepherds or amid the agrarian
landscape of the Kangra Valley, overlooked by the majestic peaks of the
Dhauladhar Range of mountains. David will touch bases with you throughout
the day to lend advice and a helping hand, should you need it. Local
interpreters will be available, too, should you want one for special
projects. After the evening meal, we'll meet to hone editing skills, critique the day's work, troubleshoot problems, discuss topics of common photographic
interest and set plans for the next day's assignment. Near the end of our time in Dharamsala, several of each participant's photographs will be chosen for enlargement printing and display at a Farewell Exhibition, on the final day in Mcleodganj.

The goal of this workshop is to take creative risks, develop new skills and to stretch your abilities as a digital photographer working in a foreign land. The finale of the workshop will be in Agra, after visiting the incomparable Taj Mahal.
