Corbett Park & Hill Stations
North-east of Delhi lies the lakeside hill station of Naini Tal. With forest walks, stunning views of the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas and monasteries adorned with prayer flags, this verdant landscape is an excellent place to relax. Mussoorie hill station looks down across the Doon Valley. You can visit its bazaars and old palaces, or take ridge walks over the mountains. To the north there are panoramic views of the Garwhal Himalayas.
RISHIKESH
Rishikesh is a holy city for Hindus located in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India. It is 24 kilometres away from another holy city, Haridwar, and is considered an access point for the cities that form the Chardham (four sacred sites) - Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.
The sacred river Ganga (anglicised to Ganges)
flows through Rishikesh, adding to its spiritual appeal and natural
beauty. In fact, it is here that the river leaves the Himalayas,
and flows out into the plains of northern India. Several temples,
ancient as well as new, can be found along the banks of the river
in Rishikesh. The city attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists
each year, from within India, as well as from other countries. The
city has several yoga centres that also attract tourists. It is
believed that meditation in Rishikesh brings one closer to
attainment of salvation, or moksha, as does a dip in the holy river
that flows through it.
Corbett
National Park is named after the famous hunter
naturalist Jim Corbett. One of India's first conservationists,
he helped to delineate the boundaries of the original park. Corbett
National Park was originally established in 1936, as Hailey
National Park. It was later renamed Ramganga National Park, before
being given its present name in 1957. This is India's first
national park and one of her finest wildlife sanctuaries. The park
stretches over an area of 520.6 sq km in the Himalayan foothills,
with open grasslands, sal and riverine forest and the Ramganga
river flows through almost its entire length.
More than 50 mammal, 580 bird and 25 reptile species have been listed in Corbett, but it is most famous for the Royal Bengal tiger. The very successful Project Tiger of the World Wildlife Fund was first launched in this park. Wildlife populations include the elephant, leopard and lynx and leopard cats, Sambar and Cheetal - the beautiful spotted deer, barking deer, hog deer, wild boar, languar and rhesus monkeys, sloth and Himalayan black bear, gharial and mugger crocodiles.
